Artist Statement: Altered Books- Our classroom did even more experimenting with different styles of art by focusing on books! The point of "altering" them was to take a regular old book, chose a certain theme or style and them completely change it to whatever it is that you like! As long as you completely change the book , of course.. The Theme that I ended up sticking to was a story called Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. It is one of my favorite stories and books that I've ever read even to this day! The way I changed my book was a little bit tricky, I had to carve out window-like wholes into the book and make and create a sort of mural with whatever elements I could find. It was really hard, but somehow it ended up coming through greatly! One of the main things I love most about this class is that we all get to try new and unique art forms and learn new skills in the process! Miss McDonald is a great teacher and I loved learning new styles of art that I had no idea existed this year!
Artist Statement: My Batik- Our classroom played with different forms of art this semester, one of them including the art of Batik. It's basically making and creating images using wax and dye. Pretty interesting right? At first we practiced a little bit with dippity-dye paper (which is certain paper that you would use for it) then we moved on to fabric, which ended up pretty well. It was hard, but we all learned something new out of it. Our theme that our teacher gave us was the theme of nature. We had to depict nature through our own special, creative way. Mine was a little hard to come up with, but then I had the idea to try something a little different. I ended up using the face of a tiger for reference haha. But instead of creating the usual face I used different elements in nature to create it. I tried depicting the sun and moon for the eyes, the waterfall for the nose, the hills and valleys on either sides of the waterfall as the stripes and the berry stems as it's whiskers. Of course I added clouds, more hills and series of many different colors. I tried layering several types of colors together to create the rainbowish look of the sky. The hills and valleys were many different colors mixed together that complimented each other, as well as the berries and other hills. Even the moon and sun were different colors than what you would expect to see in the sky.
Our class had to paint a self portrait using The grid system in which we could learn how to "experiment" with colors and learn more about color value. This grid system was separated into several different passes. The first pass only consisted of the three primary colors: Red, Yellow and Blue. As you can see, I first experimented with different shades of red for the background, and then my lips. I then used different shades of blue for my hair, my eyes and my shirt. I then went over my face with different shades of yellow. The lighter and darker sections of the first pass helped me with figuring out what colors to use to create the natural hues and textures of the portrait.
This is a comic book that i had made for this class :).
I tried to incorporate all the elements of CRAP.
